How to Preserve Fine Leather for Decades

By Heirloom & Co.·Feb 18, 2025·6 min read

Fine leather, properly maintained, will outlast generations. The key is regularity — not intensity. Over-cleaning strips the natural oils that give leather its suppleness and character.

Dust weekly. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove surface dust. Avoid using water habitually — leather does absorb moisture, which can cause it to stiffen and crack over time.

Condition twice yearly. Use a specialist leather conditioner (we recommend Leather Honey or Connolly Hide Care). Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and allow to absorb overnight. Buff gently.

Protect from sunlight. UV exposure is the single greatest enemy of leather furniture. Position sofas away from windows, or use lined curtains. Sun bleaches colour and accelerates cracking.

Act quickly on spills. Blot — never rub — with a clean, dry cloth. If moisture has penetrated, allow to air-dry naturally away from heat sources. Never use a hairdryer.

With these habits, your Heirloom leather piece will develop a beautiful patina over decades — a living record of a life well-lived.
